A Lot of Love for CUB SPORT

With over 90 million streams on Spotify and 1.2 million monthly listeners, Cub Sport are rightfully on their way to becoming worldwide superstars. They've been certified Gold in Australia and this year have had press support everywhere from the likes of i-D, Paper Magazine, Billboard, Notion, Clash, Nylon and more.

Not only are their facts and figures impressive, but their story is totally heart warming too. Lead singer Tim and keyboardist Sam both came out at the same time a couple of years back and declared their love for each other after being best friends for eight years. They got married last summer. Since then, Cub Sport have grown a huge supportive LGTBQ following and are very much using their music to encourage the queer community.

They just released the first track (alongside an exquisite video) from their upcoming triple visual A-side, '333' called 'Hearts in Halves' and we can't get enough. Give it a listen below:

After their *I repeat* SOLD-OUT show at Scala I had a quick chat with Tim.

Can you introduce yourself, what you do in the band and give us a brief history of how the band started?

I’m Tim Nelson and I’m lead singer and songwriter in Cub Sport! We’ve been playing together since we were just out of school. We started out playing shows under my name, then after a couple of years and a couple of name changes we released our debut album in 2016 which was our first release as Cub Sport.

You just performed at the Scala. How was that for you? Was this one of your first London shows?

It was one of our favourite shows we’ve ever played! The energy in the room was absolutely wild. We played our first headline show in London last year at The Waiting Room which is pretty tiny, so to see our audience grow to selling out Scala has been a dream. Hopefully we can catch you there next time!

What's your favourite song to perform live?

It’s hard to choose one favourite but at the moment I’m really loving playing 'Chasin’, 'Come On Mess Me Up', 'Lift Me Up' and 'Sometimes'.

How do British crowds differ from Oz crowds?

They’re pretty similar to our Australian audiences actually, same energy. The biggest difference is the size of the crowd... but it’s catching up in the UK!

I heard that the magnificent up & coming designer Harris Reed suited & booted you for your Scala show, is that true? If so, how did this come about?

Yes! Harris is incredible. They messaged me on Instagram saying they’d like to dress me for our London show and I’m so happy we could make it happen! I went to Harris’ place on the morning of the show and they customised a beautiful piece from their upcoming 2020 collection.

A couple of months ago you released 'I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life' with Darren Hayes. Can you tell us the story behind the song and recording process? (We absolutely love it).

I wrote it earlier this year. We had some time at home in Brisbane and we were just chilling and I looked over at Sam and our dogs, Miss and Eve, all on the couch together - they were all smiling and looked so happy and beautiful. I had this moment of deep gratitude for everything in my life and I couldn’t stop crying. That was basically the inspiration for the song. I wanted to capture that transcendent feeling. A few weeks out from the song’s release I had a thought that Darren would sound incredible singing it, so I sent him the song and asked if he’d be down to be involved with it in some way. He replied straight away saying he loved the song and would love to be on it. He sent a recording a few days later and it was perfect. We got the track re-mixed and mastered and it was out a couple of weeks later.

Forgive my ignorance, but having never been to Australia I have no idea whether night buses/last buses home are a thing... So if not, theoretically what song/album soundtracks the end of your big night out?

Frank Ocean - Blonde....preferably with a joint in hand.

What are Cub Sport listening to & loving at the moment?

These are the main albums that have been on repeat:

Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwel

Mallrat - Driving Music

FKA Twigs - Magdalene

Clairo - Immunity

Caroline Polachek - Pang

Kanye - Jesus Is King

Beverly Glenn Copeland - Keyboard Fantasies
